‘Lots of things happening’: San Joaquin County community opens large retail center

Mountain House, a San Joaquin County community that has been growing rapidly over the past decade, is celebrating its first retail center in years.Several new businesses have moved into the retail center, including a pizza place, sandwich shop, dental office, and jiu-jitsu studio. Steven Pinkerton, general manager for the Mountain House Community Services District, said the community has made notable strides in growing, its population increasing from 9,000 people in 2010 to 26,000 residents as of the latest count.”We have been primarily a family community for our first 18 years,” Pinkerton said. “There will be lots of changes in Mountain House after many years of nothing changing on the commercial front, while houses were getting built constantly for the last decade.”The new retail center opens amid a lot of challenges fueled by COVID-19. But Pinkerton said the opening is happening at the right time, noting that there hasn’t been any type of retail built since the start of the 2008 recession.”When the pandemic started, we were very concerned. They were about halfway through their process,” Pinkerton said. “Pandemic or no pandemic, short term and long term, these are services that we need in the community.”Pinkerton said more services are on the way for this thriving community, including its first grocery store slated to open later this year. The grocery store is highly anticipated, Pinkerton saying that it will serve as an anchor for the town center area.”There are a lot of things happening in Mountain House,” Pinkerton said.
